For Smart people only: Anyone who's seen ';Shakespeare in love'; PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!?

1. Shakespeare in Love deals with a similar theme. Wessex says, ”Your father was a shopkeeper. Your children will bear arms and I will recover my fortune.” Explain all three statements.

2. Shakespeare wrote a play about a woman called Viola who was cast up in a strange land after a storm. Name this play.

3. The film shows us Shakespeare writing his first tragedy. What had his audience expected? Give details.

4. There are two other playwrights of the period who appear in the film. Who are they? Who is the most successful of these? Name the plays he wrote that are mentioned in the film.

5. Who was Philip Henslowe and what relationship did he have to the playwrights?

6. Who was Hugh Fennyman and what relationship did he have to Henslowe and the playwrights?

7. What do we find out about Shakespeare’s private life from the film?

8. Will calls Rosaline his muse? What is a muse to a playwright?

9. Who is Tilney? Why do the playwrights hate and fear him?

10. Quote from the film statements that indicate the way that various groups in English society viewed the players.

11. Why were women not allowed to be players?

12. We are presented with two major groups of players in the film. Name each and name the man in charge of each. Ben Affleck has described the man he plays “ the Tom Cruise of the Elizabethan theatre.” What do you think he meant?

13. Two men make their stage debuts in the final scenes of the film? Who are they? How does this reinforce the film’s concern with the magic of the theatre?

14. Where does Will go to see a play and first see Viola?

15. What do we see of the theatre in action in the production of Romeo and Juliet?

16. What are the names of the two theatres that are mentioned in the film? Who owns each?

17. Describe the structure of the playhouse as you see it in the film. Give details and look at all the different positions from which we view the theatre as the film progresses, including the scenes backstage and the fight scene towards the end. Where does Will push Viola to in this scene?

PLEASE HELP!!!!! Even if you can only answer 1 or 2 it would be very much appreciated! :) thanks - SirrenaFor Smart people only: Anyone who's seen ';Shakespeare in love'; PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!?
One playwright mentioned is John Webster. Webster is shown as a kid (he was much younger than Shakespeare) and as having a warped fascination with violence. That's a very sly joke, because Webster's plays are notoriously brutal.

Shakespeare's play about Viola is Twelfth Night.

Tilney is the master of the Revels, which means he has power over the players. He can control which companies get invited to appear at Court and play before the Queen, which is both a very lucrative gig and a path to performances before other nobles.

The play Shakespeare is writing isn't his first tragedy. That was Titus Andronicus, which was written and performed before Romeo and Juliet.
